Overview and goal

Two ways to claim the throne

King of Tokyo is a game for 2 to 6 players where you play as mutant monsters, rampaging robots, or even abominable aliens battling in a fun, chaotic atmosphere. Roll dice and choose your strategy: will you attack your enemies, heal your wounds, or improve your Monster?

20

Victory Points

Your rampage brings you glory. Be the first Monster to gain 20 Victory Points and the crown is yours.

Last 1 standing

Or get your claws out and eliminate every rival. The last Monster still standing claims victory.

How to play

Roll six dice, up to three times

Keep the faces you like, reroll the rest, then resolve them all. Four symbols decide what your Monster does this turn.

Victory Points

Roll three-of-a-kind of 1, 2 or 3 to gain as many Victory Points as the number. Every extra matching die gains 1 more.

Energy

Gain 1 Energy cube for each Energy face rolled. Keep them in your reserve until you spend them on Power cards.

Smash

Monsters that are not in the same place as you lose 1 Life Point per Smash. Inside Tokyo you hit everyone outside, and the other way around.

Heal

Outside of Tokyo, gain 1 Life Point per Heal face, up to a maximum of 10. Inside Tokyo, Heal faces do nothing.

A turn in five steps

  1. 1

    Roll dice

Roll the 6 black dice, set aside the faces you want and reroll up to three times in total.

  2. 2

    Resolve dice

Resolve every die in the order you like: Victory Points, Energy, Smash and Heal.

  3. 3

    Enter Tokyo

If nobody holds Tokyo, you must move in and place your Monster on the board.

  4. 4

    Buy Power cards

Spend Energy cubes on the three face-up cards, or spend 2 to sweep them away and reveal three new ones.

  5. 5

    End of turn

Resolve the card effects that trigger at the end of your turn, then pass the dice to your left.

The Tokyo board, divided into Tokyo City and Tokyo Bay

Holding Tokyo is a gamble

  • Gain 1 Victory Point when you enter Tokyo, and 2 more if you start your turn there.
  • Your Smashes hit every Monster outside at once, but you cannot Heal while you stay.
  • With 5 or 6 players, Tokyo Bay opens up and a second Monster takes the heat.
